Kenya is strategically placed as a prime leisure and business hub with many international companies setting up their African base here.
As such there have been major improvements to the infrastructure, and currently the Great North Road and other highways within the cities are undergoing major construction. We will keep updating the progress in this section of our website.
Driving to Mombasa and the coast in general is much smoother, shortening the time to 4 hours non-stop.
Thika road which leads to Thika, the central highlands, Mt. Kenya, Aberdares, Nanyuki, Timau, Laikipia, Samburu, Lake Turkana and the other arid lands of the north is currently quite confusing as you join it in Nairobi, with unfinished bridges criss-crossing with graded murram roads. So drive carefully and expect your journey to stretch by at least an hour.
Now landing at the main Jomo Kenyatta international airport is no longer stressful if you're going inland as there is a shortcut through Embakasi. Otherwise those driving into town should expect heavy morning and evening rush hour traffic so preferably arrange your flight to arrive before 6a.m., during the day after 8a.m. and before 2p.m., or after 5p.m.
An easier way to get around- if you're adventurous enough- is by the public buses and matatus (minivans). Kenyans are friendly and the days of overpacking transport vehicles are over, so sit back and enjoy the ride.
Regarding facilities for internet access, banking, forex bureaus, restaurants with international cuisine, casinos - just about anything you can think of, these are in plenty.
