Travel tips
Health/immunisation
Good medical facilities are available in the main cities, but we recommend that Medical Insurance be taken before arrival. Vaccinations for yellow fever and Cholera are required. A course of anti-malaria tablets is strongly advised, as is a mosquito repellent. Bilharzia is present in some lakes and swimming is not recommended except in designated areas. Drink only boiled or bottled water; hotels and lodges have mineral water.
Entry requirements
A valid passport and Visa are required. Visa requirement some times change, so check before you travel. Visas are issued at Ugandan Missions abroad and also on arrival at the airport. Visa fees: Student-US$ 20; Single entry-US$50; Multiple Entry 6 months-US$100; multiple entry 1 year-US$200; Inland transit-US$15. However some countries are exempted including EU, US, Canadian or Australian citizens, but required by South Africans.
Getting to Uganda
Direct flights are only available from cities in Europe on flights including British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Emirates, Kenya Airways, Turkish Airlines and KLM. There are connecting flights from America. The only direct flights between Uganda and other African Countries are aboard Air Uganda, Sky Jet, Ethiopian Airlines, Egypt Air, Kenya Airways and South African Airways. Charter services can be arranged on request.
Currency
The currency is the Uganda shilling in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000 and 50000 notes. Coins are for smaller denominations of 50,100,200 and 500. All major currencies are accepted, although the US dollar is the most common. Money can also be exchanged in forex bureaus in all large towns although rates are more favourable in the capital. Cash or traveler’s cheques can be exchanged. Although only the major hotels accept credit card payments, Barclays and Standard chartered banks have ATM’s that accept visa and Euro card located also at the main Entebbe Airport. Transaction charge is roughly Uganda shillings 5000 or the equivalent. Larger denominations fetch better rates. Forex bureaus also tend to offer better rates than the banks and tend to stay open for longer hours. Note that most financial institutions do not accept notes older than 5 years. There is no limit on amount of cash you can bring into the country.
Shopping
A souvenir is essential from your visit to Uganda, and some wonderful hand crafts can be found in places like The African Village, Uganda crafts Village at The National Theatre in Kampala. Modern malls are now ubiquitous in the capital notably at Garden City, Game & Shoprite stores, Capital shoppers Embassy Supermarket and Uchumi. For fresh tropical fruits don’t miss out on Nakasero Market in the city center and St. Balikudembe (Owino) that has a variety of goods ranging from second hand clothing with designer labels, bark cloth and other fetishes to food stuff.
Entertainments/nightlife
This varies from sublime to spontaneous. In Kampala and larger towns, revellers really dress up to go out and discos are en vogue including Ange Noir Discotheque, Club Obligato, Viper Room and Club Silk. Visit Pyramid, Grand, Simba and Kampala Casinos that also provide live bands. Our African Themed restaurant in Kampala also offers a relaxed atmosphere & sumptuous cuisine served with an authentic African touch. Cineplex Cinema at Garden City also offers latest blockbuster movies with modern screen and sound.
What to wear
Informality is the norm-for day time wear, sports shirts and slacks are recommended for men, and light cotton dresses, skirts and tops for women. In city hotels a little more formality may be required in the evenings. For visitors going into the Mountains, a sweater and sturdy gripped walking boots are required. A hat for protection against the Sun, Sunglasses and a swimwear should also be packed. Avoid bright colours when on safari. Brown, beige, dark green and Khaki trousers for walking in scrub is recommended.
