Travel Tips Kenya
....................................................................................................................................

Cultural

  1. Respect the fact that different cultures react differently to dress and gender. Dress decently and behave respectfully when visiting villages and observing lifestyles.
  2. It's advisable to do some research on tribes beforehand so as not to appear offended should they have different practises. For instance, female circumcission is still practised in some Samburu villages.

Adventure safaris

  1. Do an in-depth search for tour companies that offer adventure safaris off the beaten track so as not to receive unwanted surprises.
  2. Certain tour companies offer varied itineraries to many destinations, so obtain the required brochures that will give you a wider choice.

Transport

  1. Many Kenyan roads are in a rough state so it is advisable to use a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Either way investigate beforehand because you may not need it after all.
  2. Public transport does not penetrate into many destinations- confirm when booking.
  3. When searching for a transport hire company use a company you or someone else has tried and tested.
  4. When hiring a vehicle confirm the terms of use so as to avoid later repercussions. Keep a signed copy of the terms or contract.

Must haves when on holiday

  1. Mosquito repellant
  2. Sunscreen
  3. Hats for children
  4. Torch
  5. Camera
  6. Map

Camping

  1. Confirm which camping gear is provided at your destination before you travel.
  2. Preferably invest in your own camping equipment.
  3. Carry your own toiletries.

Game drives

  1. Do not make noise when viewing animals or throw things at them.
  2. Do not feed wildlife.
  3. Do not get out of your vehicle when inside parks, except in designated sites or in the presence of a ranger.
  4. Do not litter the parks.
  5. Most park gates have bathrooms; go there so as to avoid getting outside your vehicle in the park.
  6. Do not let the size or appearance of an animal delude you- a heavy-looking rhino can charge suddenly and hit you before you react. The calm stare of a lion is very deceptive because it is very agile. And buffaloes tend to attack without provocation, especially when alone.
