Rwanda

Prepare yourself for an unparalleled experience in the wild lush forested slopes of the mountains in the Virunga Massif.

Gorilla tracking involves an exhilarating climb to the gorilla’s natural habitat, through shady bamboo forest that offers fantastic views in all directions, before you're completely sucked into the mysterious mood of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and the chattering of rare golden monkeys.

Even as your senses are overwhelmed by this beauty you suddenly encounter a fully-grown Silverback Gorilla, up to three times the size of an average man! He stares at you calmly, used to humans' stares of awe and frequent visits that have made him and his kind remarkably peaceable and tolerant of human visitors.

Rwanda is home to almost half of the 750 mountain gorillas found in the wild and the kingdom has been at the forefront of gorilla conservation efforts because this is one of the world's most endangered species. During the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the gorillas' no longer had human protection so poachers reduced their numbers from 700 to just over 200. The lack of peace and freedom discouraged them from having children. Fortunately since then their numbers are increasing.

Join the over 20,000 visitors annually who visit these creatures which share more than 97% genetic material with human beings.

Rwanda has five gorilla families that are open for tracking:

  • Amahoro
  • Susa
  • Group 13
  • Sabyinyo
  • Umubano
